The Parkland Formula & Burn Shock
The Parkland Formula is the primary clinical protocol for fluid resuscitation in patients during the first 24 hours following severe burns. By accurately estimating Total Body Surface Area (TBSA), clinicians can prevent hypovolemic shock and acute kidney injury.
Timing and Administration
Fluid resuscitation begins at the time of injury. Phase 1 delivers 50% of the total volume over the first 8 hours, while Phase 2 deliver the remaining 50% over the next 16 hours.
Expert FAQs
What fluid is recommended?
Lactated Ringer's (LR) is the fluid of choice. It is isotonic and more physiological than Normal Saline, reducing the risk of hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis during large-volume resuscitation.
