Free Medical Calculators for Healthcare Professionals

MedicalCalculatorHub is a free, evidence-based clinical decision support platform built for physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, geriatricians, and critical care specialists. Every calculator is constructed from peer-reviewed, validated scoring algorithms — the same systems taught in residency and used at the bedside in leading hospitals worldwide.

Whether you need a SOFA score for a septic ICU patient, a Berg Balance Scale assessment for fall prevention, a GDS-15 depression screen for an elderly patient, or a BMI and ideal body weight calculation before dosing — every tool loads in under one second with no login required.

All calculations run entirely in your browser. No patient data is transmitted or stored. Safe for clinical use without any institutional configuration required.

Physical therapy & rehabilitation tools

Physical therapists and rehabilitation specialists will find the largest dedicated collection outside of specialist software. The Berg Balance Scale and Timed Up and Go (TUG) test are the two most commonly requested balance assessments in inpatient and outpatient rehab settings. Combined with the Gait Speed Calculator — widely called the "sixth vital sign" — clinicians can complete a full functional mobility screen in minutes. For orthopaedic outcomes, the KOOS Score and LEFS cover knee and lower extremity function across all conditions. Spine outcomes include the Oswestry Disability Index and Neck Disability Index.

ICU & critical care decision support

Intensivists and critical care nurses can access the SOFA score for real-time organ failure tracking, the Glasgow Coma Scale for neurological status, NEWS2 for early deterioration detection, and ventilator parameter calculators — all optimised for bedside tablet or phone use without institutional login. Each ICU tool links to its original validation study.

Geriatric assessment & elderly care tools

Geriatricians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and primary care clinicians have access to a complete Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) toolkit. The GDS-15 provides the validated 15-question depression screen required for Medicare Annual Wellness Visits and SNF MDS 3.0. Functional independence is measured with the Katz ADL Index and Lawton IADL Scale. Frailty is assessed with the Clinical Frailty Scale and Edmonton Frail Scale. Physical performance is quantified with the SPPB, and fear of falling with the FES-I.

Clinical departments & specialties

Evidence-based & expert-reviewed

Every scoring system is sourced from its original validation study. The Berg Balance Scale follows Berg et al. (1992). The SOFA score follows Vincent et al. (1996). The Timed Up and Go follows Podsiadlo & Richardson (1991). The KOOS follows Roos & Lohmander (2003). The GDS-15 follows Sheikh & Yesavage (1986). Results supplement — never replace — comprehensive clinical assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Are these medical calculators free to use?
Yes. All calculators on MedicalCalculatorHub.com are completely free with no registration required. Designed for licensed healthcare professionals at the bedside or in clinic.
Is patient data stored when using these calculators?
No. All calculations run client-side in your browser. MedicalCalculatorHub does not transmit, store, or log any patient-identifiable information. Safe for clinical use without any institutional configuration required.
What is the Berg Balance Scale used for?
The Berg Balance Scale (BBS) is a 14-item assessment for static and dynamic balance in adults. Scores below 45 indicate high fall risk. It is the gold standard for fall prevention assessment in elderly and neurological patients, with excellent inter-rater reliability (ICC = 0.98).
What does a SOFA score indicate?
The Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score predicts ICU mortality based on organ dysfunction across six systems: respiratory, coagulation, liver, cardiovascular, CNS, and renal. A score above 11 is associated with greater than 90% predicted mortality. It is also used to diagnose sepsis-associated organ dysfunction.
What is the GDS-15 cut-off score for depression?
A GDS-15 score of 5 or above is the validated cut-off for a positive depression screen in adults aged 65 and older. Severity: 0–4 = Normal; 5–8 = Mild; 9–11 = Moderate; 12–15 = Severe. Sensitivity 81%, specificity 78% (Sheikh & Yesavage, 1986). The GDS-15 satisfies the CMS Medicare Annual Wellness Visit depression screening requirement and is fully in the public domain.
What is the KOOS score and what conditions is it used for?
The KOOS (Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score) is a 42-item patient-reported outcome measure with 5 independent subscales: Pain, Symptoms, Activities of Daily Living, Sport & Recreation, and Quality of Life. Each subscale is scored 0–100 (100 = no problems). It is validated for knee osteoarthritis, ACL reconstruction, total knee replacement, and meniscal injuries. The MCID is 8–10 points per subscale.
Are the calculators validated and evidence-based?
Yes. Every calculator is built on peer-reviewed, validated algorithms linked to the original validation study and reviewed by a licensed clinician before publication. Always correlate results with full clinical assessment.
Which medical specialties are covered?
Physical Therapy (Berg Balance, TUG, 6MWT, Oswestry, KOOS, LEFS, FIM, SPADI, NDI, Borg RPE, Fugl-Meyer), ICU / Critical Care (SOFA, Glasgow Coma Scale, APACHE II, NEWS2, CURB-65, Anion Gap), General Medicine (BMI, IBW, caloric needs, sleep cycle, BAC), Dentistry (Periodontal Staging, DMFT, PSR, CAMBRA, Plaque Index), and Geriatric Assessment (GDS-15, Katz ADL, Lawton IADL, Clinical Frailty Scale, Edmonton Frail Scale, SPPB, FES-I).
