Clinical Significance of the QTc Interval

The QT interval represents the duration of ventricular electrical activity (depolarization and repolarization). Because heart rate significantly impacts this duration, clinicians use the Corrected QT (QTc) to standardize measurements and assess patient safety.

Interpreting Prolongation Risks

  • Normal: < 440ms (Men), < 460ms (Women)
  • Borderline: 440 - 500ms
  • High Risk: > 500ms (High risk for Torsades de Pointes)

Expert Cardiac FAQs

Bazett vs. Fridericia: Which is better?

The Bazett formula is traditional but tends to over-correct at high heart rates (>100 bpm) and under-correct at low rates. The Fridericia formula is considered more accurate across a wider range of heart rates and is clinically preferred in ICU settings.

Which drugs cause QTc prolongation?

Common culprits include antiarrhythmics (Sotalol, Amiodarone), antipsychotics (Haloperidol), certain antibiotics (Azithromycin, Fluoroquinolones), and antiemetics (Ondansetron).
